Despite over a century of research, tuberculosis remains a leading cause of illness and death in many parts of the world. The TB epidemic has been further fueled by HIV, which leads to markedly increased susceptibility.
Our lab studies the fundamental biology of the causative organism, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We investigate how these bacteria survive, grow and cause disease. We use a variety of genetic, biochemical and ultrastructural approaches to understand bacterial cell biology and pathogenesis. Much of our work is devoted to the long term goal of coming up with new approaches to making more effective antibiotics to treat and prevent TB.
